AL Red Cross monitoring weather and urges residents to stay aware

The American Red Cross Alabama Region is monitoring the weather system that is moving across Alabama today and is prepared to respond if needed. Red Cross volunteers, supplies, and shelters are on standby, and will be ready to respond to whatever this system may bring.

The Red Cross urges residents to take steps now to stay safe when severe weather threatens. As with any disaster, preparation can be the difference between life and death. The Red Cross recommends individuals and families respond to severe weather in the following ways:

  • Listen to local news or NOAA Weather Radio for emergency updates. Watch for signs of a storm, like darkening skies, lightning flashes or increasing wind.
  • Postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are likely to occur.

Montgomery EMA schedules family emergency preparedness day

The Montgomery City/County Emergency Management Agency invites River Region families to take part in Family Emergency Preparedness Day this Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Eastdale Mall. The event focuses on preparedness and safety through interactive displays, demonstrations, fun giveaways and an opportunity to meet local first responders. Preparedness Day highlights include the National Weather Service tornado simulator and Alabama Power Company’s power line safety exhibit.

Participating agencies include Montgomery Fire/Rescue, Montgomery Police Department, Montgomery Sheriff’s Department, American Red Cross, Alabama Power Company, National Weather Service, Alabama Emergency Management Agency, Citizen Emergency Response Team, Volunteers in Police Service, Neighborhood Watch, and 2-1-1 Connects South Central Alabama.

Take steps to be weather ready during National Severe Weather Preparedness Week

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are teaming up to promote National Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 3-9. Sponsored by FEMA and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Severe Weather Preparedness Week encourages individuals, families, businesses and communities to know about severe weather risks, take action to prepare for them, and Be a Force of Nature by encouraging others to get prepared.

Each year, many people are killed or seriously injured by tornadoes and other types of severe weather, despite advance warning. In 2012, there were more than 450 weather-related fatalities and nearly 2,600 injuries nationwide. Severe weather knows no boundaries and affects every individual in every region.

Quidditch Tournament re-scheduled due to inclement weather

Montgomery, AL- Due to inclement weather in the 24 hours leading up to the Inaugural Quidditch Tournament and Festival, it will now be MOVED to Saturday, May 4, 2013 to coincide with the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts’ Flimp Festival.

The City of Montgomery,  Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and Alabama Shakespeare Festival will host the event in the Blount Cultural Park on Saturday, May 4, 2013 from 10 AM to 2 PM.   

Working in partnership, the City of Montgomery, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts located in Montgomery’s Blount Cultural Park, are pleased to host Montgomery’s first Quidditch Tournament and Festival in conjunction with the Museum’s Flimp Festival.

The event has been organized to increase public awareness about the Blount Cultural Park, the charities, and to raise financial support for their programs.

Gov. Bentley to discuss upcoming state sales tax holiday for severe weather preparedness items

Governor Robert Bentley on Wednesday will hold a news conference in the State Capitol to discuss Alabama’s upcoming state sales tax holiday for severe weather preparedness items. The Governor will also recognize Severe Weather Awareness Week throughout the state of Alabama.

Montgomery County EMA warns residents in low-lying areas to take precautionary measures

The Montgomery City/County Emergency Management Agency advises that the Montgomery area remains under a flash flood warning that was issued initially at 7:15 a.m. Monday and extended until Feb. 13. The northern portion of Montgomery County was placed under a flash flood warning at approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday.

The Montgomery area has had seven reports of flooding issues due to debris-clogged drainage areas. There have been no reports of damage to structures.

Due to the amount of rainfall, the Alabama River and Catoma Creek are expected to crest Tuesday, Feb. 12. The Alabama River’s latest observation was 28.65 feet and rising. It is expected to crest at 32 feet by 1 p.m. Tuesday without reaching flood stage (35 feet). The river is then expected to start receding slowly after cresting. Catoma Creek’s latest observation was at 17.1 feet and expected to crest at 21.9 feet by 1 p.m. Tuesday without reaching flood stage (25 feet), before slowly receding.
