ALDOT urges motorists to drive safely this holiday

Highway travel during the 2012 Labor Day holiday weekend is expected to be heavy in Alabama during the three-day holiday weekend and as the college football season begins. The Alabama Department of Transportation urges motorists to drive safely in their travels.

As an added precaution during the heavily traveled holiday, ALDOT today announced there would be no temporary lane closures on Alabama interstates from 12 noon Friday, Aug. 31 to midnight Monday, Sept. 3.

Limiting roadwork during this busy holiday period is a safety measure for the traveling public, construction industry workers and maintenance crews. Throughout the year, ALDOT limits road construction during major holiday weekends. Emergency lane closures may be possible dependant on specific circumstances on interstates and other state roadways.

Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded nine grants, totaling $250,000, to help law enforcement officers make Alabama roadways safer before and during the Labor Day holiday.

The funds will cover overtime pay for police officers and sheriff’s deputies Aug. 17 – Sept. 3 for the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Officers will emphasize enforcement of DUI laws by conducting safety checkpoints and increasing the number of patrols on Alabama roads.

“Drivers should never consume alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a vehicle,” Bentley said.

Commuters along Highway 231 between Wetumpka and Montgomery can expect significant delays starting today, as that stretch of highway undergoes construction.

The Alabama Department of Transportation has started a project that will add a third northbound lane between the Tallapoosa River Bridge and Redland Road.

The project will also include the demolition and rebuilding of the relief bridge, which will carry the three lanes.

Because of the construction, some northbound traffic will be shifted into the southbound lanes.  The speed limit is being lowered to 35 mph.

The DOT expects the 4.2 million dollar project to be completed by June 2013.
