Cody Pearcy is the first Huntingdon football player to sign with NFL

Cody Pearcy didn’t become the first Huntingdon football player picked in the NFL Draft on Saturday. But he did become the first Hawk to sign with an NFL team.

Within minutes after the completion of the draft, Pearcy’s phone began ringing and free-agent offers began coming in. After considering his choices and talking it over with his family and agent, Pearcy signed a priority free-agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons.

Pearcy is the first Huntingdon football player to sign with a NFL team.

“I’m just truly thankful and blessed,” Pearcy said by phone from his home Saturday night. “I’m still trying to take it all in. I’m trying to let it sink in that I just signed a contract with a NFL team.”

Pearcy will report to the Falcons’ rookie mini-camp in May. According to the Falcons’ website, rookie mini-camp will be May 11-13.

“I’m excited for myself and for Huntingdon,” Pearcy said.

Huntingdon Lady Hawks softball win GSAC title, advance to NCAA regional for first time

The Huntingdon softball team had one goal entering this weekend’s Great South Athletic Conference tournament. A year after losing two games on the final day of the tournament and finishing as the runner-up, the Lady Hawks were determined to finish the job this season.

Huntingdon knocked off Maryville 7-2 on Sunday to claim its first GSAC tournament title since 2006.

“This is huge. It’s what we’ve worked for all year,” Huntingdon head coach Gynger Williams said. “The girls have been dedicated to this since Day 1 and they weren’t going to let anything stop them. They said they were going to do it and today we accomplished the goal.”

With the conference title, the Lady Hawks (28-13) advance to their first NCAA Division III Regional. The Lady Hawks will await the tournament selection announcement on May 7 to find out where they will play.

“This is a great day to be a Hawk,” senior catcher Kristi Taylor said. “It’s exciting to accomplish our goal.

Registration for MPS Pre-K program begins Monday

Registration for MPS Pre-K program begins Monday

As Montgomery Public Schools near the end of this school year, preparations are already in place for the next. Beginning Monday, children who will be four years old on or before September 2, 2012 may be eligible for a limited number of pre-k classes at some Title I schools. Registration will continue through May 28.

While Alabama statistics indicate six percent of four year olds attend pre-k in each school system, Montgomery Public Schools serve 12 percent of the estimated county’s population that would attend a public pre-school. MPS has a variety of creative funding strategies using federal monies, grants, and support from the Montgomery Education Foundation to serve around 400 pre-k students.

Superintendent Barbara W. Thompson believes in the power of pre-k, and that it is actually the first step to lowering the dropout rate.

“The road to graduation begins on the first day of school,” said Superintendent Thompson.

Huntingdon pitcher Grant Lowman and head baseball coach D.J. Conville were both recognized by the Great South Athletic Conference on Thursday. Lowman was named the GSAC Freshman of the Year and Conville was named the GSAC Coach of the Year.

A total of 16 Huntingdon baseball players received recognition from the GSAC, including nine Academic All-Conference players.

“Lowman is very deserving of this recognition,” Conville said. “He’s been pretty solid for us all year and he’s stepped in and been really strong in some important games.”

Lowman is 6-1 this season with a 2.25 ERA, 50 strikeouts, 28 walks, 49 hits and 16 earned runs in 64 innings of work. In conference, he is 4-0 with a 1.73 ERA, 20 strikeouts, 12 walks, 23 hits and five earned runs in 26 innings.

“Catching for him this year, he’s had a lot of command and has been able to throw strikes,” said Huntingdon catcher Joseph Odom, the 2011 GSAC Freshman of the Year.

The program will expand into the new eastside high school when it opens its doors.

"Having Mandarin Chinese available for our students is an exciting opportunity,” said MPS Superintendent Barbara W. Thompson. “This allows our students to expand their world views and appreciate other cultures. Children learn languages best intheir early years."
