Warhawks drop SSAC doubleheader to Mobile | Schools
The No. 18 Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped the opening two games of its Southern States Athletic Conference series against the University of Mobile on Sunday, falling 5-1 in the opener and 14-3 in seven innings of the second game.
With the loss, the Warhawks fell to 18-14 on the season and 5-9 in league play. The Rams improved to 21-9 overall and 9-5 in conference games.
In the opener, Bryan Young paced the offense with two hits, including a RBI single in the second inning. The run-scoring hit gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead against Mobile starter Ryan Hines (3-1). Hines allowed just the one run and struck out seven in five innings of work.
The Rams took control of the game with five runs in the final three innings, as a pair of AUM errors led to three unearned runs. Tied 1-1 heading to the sixth inning, Mobile took the lead for good when Ryan Parazine scored on a wild pitch. Parazine led off the inning with a double.
Eran Franks suffered the loss for the Warhawks, allowing two runs and four hits in five innings of work. Patrick Devault was the victim of the sloppy defense, as the three unearned run scored with him on the mound, before Erik Lawrence tossed 2/3 of an inning to close out the game.
Hayden Hillyer scored the lone run of the contest for AUM, while adding one of its five hits on the game.
In game two, the Rams pounded out 18 hits and were again able to take advantage of poor defense to put the game out of reach. Mobile scored the final nine runs of the game, including the final five being unearned.
Trailing 5-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning, the Warhawks put their best effort forward to get back into the game.
Branden Kelley led off the frame with a bunt single, before Chad Mansmann ripped a single to left field. Wes Hughes followed with a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position with just one out. Blake Bearden followed with a tailing fly ball toward the right field line, where Parazine made a diving effort to catch the ball. On the play, the ball appeared to hit the ground, but Bearden was called out, rather than standing on second base with a double.
Bearden’s fly ball scored Kelley and Hillyer followed with a run-scoring single, but the Warhawks lost all momentum as a result of the play.
In the game, seven Mobile players finished with multiple hits, including three each by Jared Brannon, Michael Bruno and Neil Hudson. Mansmann led AUM with two hits and a run scored.
Will Ruffin (3-2) took the loss for the Warhawks, allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings. Spencer Youmans followed with a 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs. Blake Woo tossed one inning, while Lawrence and Matt Hand each recorded one out.
Shane Ikner (5-3) tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and three runs, while striking out five.
AUM and Mobile will conclude its series on Monday with a single game at 1 p.m.
