Women's Basketball travels to Division II West Georgia Saturday | Schools
After a brief one-game homestand, the No. 20 Auburn Montgomery women’s basketball team will head to Carrolton, Ga. this Saturday to take on the University of West Georgia in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
AUM (10-1) is coming off its first loss of the season, a 75-49 setback to No. 2 Freed-Hardeman. This will be the team’s eighth road game out of the first 11 to start the season.
The Wolves are currently 5-3 after a 71-64 victory over Columbus State on Wednesday. They are led offensively by Mone Peoples. The senior averages 13.0 points per game, and has led the team in scoring five of its eight games.
“It’s a step up in play,” Head Coach Dan Davis said. “As a Division II team, you know they’re going to be athletic. We’re looking forward to getting back on the road and hopefully closing this part of the season out on a positive note.”
The Warhawks continue to be led by senior LaKenya Drayton. She averages 14.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, both team highs. Fellow team captain Kamesha Strong contributes 5.8 points and a team-high 3.8 assists per game. Marren Schwartz has also been consistent on both ends, with 5.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
AUM is shooting 42.6 percent from the field in 2012-13, while holding opponents to 35.7 percent shooting. The Warhawks have outscored opponents by 130 points (696-566), winning by an average of 11.8 points a game.
Depth has been a key part of AUM’s success this season, and Davis believes it will be important once again on Saturday as the Warhawks look to rebound from a tough defeat last Friday.
“The girls have tremendous chemistry and belief in each other,” he said. “And that’s going to help us a lot as we move forward through the season. It doesn’t mean that there won’t be some bumps in the road, but they have the right approach every day.”
Saturday’s matchup begins at 1 p.m., and it will be the last game for the Warhawks until after Christmas, when the team travels to Florida for the Ave Maria Classic on December 30 and 31.
