For the seventh consecutive week, the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s tennis team earned the top spot in the NAIA Women’s Tennis Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Wednesday.
The Warhawks (22-2) were the unanimous choice atop the poll for the fourth consecutive week, earning all 13 first-place votes, and 343 total votes. AUM, which won its fifth straight Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament this season, closed out the regular season ranked first for the second time in three years.
In this week’s poll, the top 16 spots remained the same, including the top-five for the fifth straight week. Fresno Pacific trails the Warhawks by 11 points and held on to the No. 2 spot, while Embry-Riddle is ranked third. Oklahoma Christian and Azusa Pacific rounded out the top five.
AUM was one of five teams ranked from the SSAC, as it was joined by No. 7 Brenau, No. 9 William Carey, No. 11 Shorter and No. 17 Lee. Conference member Belhaven was among the others receiving votes.
Since the 2000 season, the Warhawks have held the top position in the poll for a NAIA-record 64 weeks. Brenau is the only other institution during the period to have earned the No. 1 spot in double-figure weeks, having been selected to the position 10 times.
As a result of their victory in the conference tournament, the Warhawks earned the SSAC's automatic berth to the NAIA Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, held May 15-19 in Mobile, Ala. AUM's opponent has yet to be determined.
