MPD charges suspect in city's 22nd homicide of 2013

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- The Montgomery Police Department is charged a suspect in connection to the city's 22nd homicide of 2013. Gerald Perry, a Dothan resident, is now facing one count of murder for the death of Michael Timmons.

Perry was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals on May 30 and is currently being held out of state, awaiting extradition.

Once in Montgomery, Perry will be held under a $75,000 bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

At approximately 3 p.m. on May 1, Michael Timmons was gunned down in front of a residence at the 900 block of Alexander Street in Montgomery.

Timmons was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

Police say the homicide was drug related.

MPD makes arrest in 25th homicide of 2013

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- The Montgomery Police Department is confirming that it's made an arrest in the city's 25th homicide of 2013.

MPD detectives have charged Willie Johnson, 34, of Montgomery in the murder of 24-year-old Courtney Lawery.

After his arrest, Johnson was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility where he is being held under a $75,000, bond.

At about 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, Montgomery Police and Fire Medics responded to the 1000 block of Early Street after receiving a report of a subject shot.

On the scene officers found the victim, Lawery, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

River Region United Way President and CEO announces upcoming retirement

Montgomery, AL - Russell S. Dunman has announced his retirement as President and Chief Executive Officer of the River Region United Way effective December 31, 2013. In a letter announcing his plans to retire, Dunman said, “As I prepare to part with the work I love, I do so in the full knowledge that it is time for me to pass the torch to new leadership who will guide the River Region United Way into the future.”

Dunman began his volunteer service with the River Region United Way (RRUW) on the Community Council in 1981 and has held several volunteer leadership positions within RRUW, including serving as President of the Board of Directors from 2004-2005. He was hired as the organization’s Executive Director in 2010.

Before joining RRUW, Dunman spent 34 years in the banking industry with Regions Financial Corporation. He has served on numerous local boards of directors and is the current President of the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery.

New Modified Block Scheduling Plans  Designed to Increase Student Achievement

MONTGOMERY, AL ─ Middle schools around the nation are struggling with improving student achievement – and Montgomery is no exception. This fall, students in grades 6-8 will follow a new schedule designed to provide students with a more concentrated learning experience. Superintendent Barbara W. Thompson announced the plans to move middle schools to a modified block schedule at Tuesday’s meeting of the Montgomery County Board of Education. 

Alabama National Fair announces 2013 lineup

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- Organizers for the Alabama National Fair, set for October, are wasting no time in putting together a stable of acts for 2013.

Scheduled to perform on Saturday, October 5 is country music star Josh Turner.

On Sunday, October 6, the featured act will be Anthony Hamilton.

The band Foreigner will take the stage on Sunday, October 12.

Also new for 2013, organizers are setting up the Aussie Kingdom, where fairgoers can interact with different species of marsupials (pouched animals) like kangaroos and wallabies.

There's also a Swampmaster's Gator Show where the Swampmaster will catch an 8 foot, 200 lb. alligator with his bare hands.

4 ASU athletics programs now ineligible for post-season play

MONTGOMERY, AL- A total of 12 Alabama
State University athletics programs scored at or above the national average
when the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its annual
academic progress ratings Tuesday.  

Of ASU's 18 athletics programs,
four did not meet qualifications for post-season eligibility in the upcoming
school year.

The Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a
four-year average based on the school's overall student-athlete eligibility,
and graduation and retention rates for student-athletes who participated during
the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years. The APR also serves
as a predictor of graduation success.

A total of four ASU programs scored
960 or above over the four-year period: women's cross country (990), women's
indoor track (970), women's outdoor track (969) and women's tennis (961).
