Montgomery and Selma BBQ restaurants are up for state title | News
MONTGOMERY – Some of the state’s best known barbecue restaurants are squaring off in a Facebook contest to pick the state’s favorite as the field narrows to the Final Four. Jim ‘N Nick’s in Birmingham faces off against Tuscaloosa’s Dreamland to represent Central Alabama while Big Bob Gibson in Decatur is matched against LawLers in Athens to represent North Alabama.
Elsewhere, Sam’s BBQ in Montgomery is up against Lannie’s in Selma to represent the South region and L.A. BBQ in Summerdale faces off against The Shed in Mobile for the Gulf region. The four regional winners will be decided on Saturday afternoon.
Alabama Tourism Department’s Brian Jones said more than 40,000 votes have been cast since the original field of 32 was announced March 11 as an event during the Year of Alabama Food. “The contest is based around basketball’s March Madness,” Jones said. “We started by asking our Year of Alabama Food Facebook page fans to name their favorite BBQ restaurant. Then we took the 32 most suggested restaurants and divided them into four different geographic regions and matched them up into different voting brackets. Barbeque is definitely a passion in Alabama and this has really brought out the regional and local rivalries.”
The overall winner will be announced April 8, paralleling the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Championship. The winning restaurant will receive a trophy and more importantly state bragging rights.
