Local authorities to use sunken riverboat as training site before salvaging it
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Capitol Oyster Bar riverboat which has been resting on the bottom of the Alabama River since April 2012 will soon be home to a public safety training exercise.
The Montgomery City/County Emergency Management Agency will conduct a training exercise at the site on January 15 starting at 8:30 a.m.
The exercise will include water-based fire suppression and underwater search-and-rescue operations on the boat.
The Montgomery Fire/Rescue and Police watercraft will participate, as well as the Public Safety Dive Team.
After the one-hour long exercise, the boat will be removed from the river by Seamon's Wrecker Service which has volunteered its services to the city. The boat will then be salvaged by Sabel Steel.
UPDATE: Seamon's Wrecker Service determined on January 14 that due to recent rains, the extraction of the boat from the Alabama River has been postponed. The rains have left the ground too soft to support the necessary equipment.
The training exercise will continue as planned.
