AUM to conduct emergency exercise on Aug. 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The AUM Office of Public Safety and Risk Management, in partnership with the Montgomery Police Department and emergency management officials, will conduct an active shooter exercise on campus Aug. 2, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., to help first responders and communicators evaluate and critique their response efforts.

This is not a campus-wide drill. The exercise will be confined to Moore Hall and West Courtyards, which will both be closed during the proceedings. The exercise is thoroughly planned and scripted, requiring involvement of very few non-law enforcementpersonnel.

The exercise is required as a part of the Auburn/AUM Higher Education Emergency Management grant to ensure readiness, communications and mutual aid. Agencies participating in the exercise include AUM Public Safety and Campus Police, AUM Center for Government, Montgomery Police Department, Montgomery Fire and Rescue, and Montgomery Emergency Management officials.

While it is nearly impossible to fully anticipate the trauma and chaos of an active shooter event, proper training can prepare officers, students, faculty and staff to react effectively,” said Ricky Adams, AUM public safety director. “Providing thorough and realistic exercises for public safety personnel and regular drills or instructional presentations for campus personnel and students can help to ensure that effective procedures are followed, reducing the likelihood of fatalities or injuries.”
