Make It an Artful Summer at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts during Week-Long Art Camps

Montgomery, AL –Serious art makes for serious fun at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts during its summertime week-long, half-day or all-day art camps. For art-loving children ages 6 to 13, this fun-filled camp offers small group instruction in drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, and sculpture. Students also have the unique opportunity to view and learn about famous works of art in a Museum setting. Students may sign up for more than one week as each one will offer different themes, art activities, and techniques.

Week-long art camps will be offered the following weeks:

June 24-28;
July 8-12;
July 22-26;  
and August 5-9.  

All classes are from 8:30 a.m. to Noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Early drop-off and late pick-up are available for an additional fee.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The last bell of the school year will ring out on Thursday afternoon, signaling the start of summer vacation for thousands of Montgomery area K-12 students. But this bell will sound more like an alarm clock to parents who haven’t yet devised a plan to keep their kids occupied for the next three months. Luckily, the Auburn Montgomery Division of Continuing Education is still enrolling children of all ages – preschool to 12th grade – in a variety of summer camps and courses running weekly through July 26.

 

Highlights for 2013 include:

 

-       Skateboarding Camp – Learn to kick flip and grind at this new camp held at Montgomery’s Skate Park.

Montgomery County Clean-up Day is this Saturday, May 25! 

Between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., drop your over-sized items, appliances and yard waste at one of the clean-up locations in the Pike Road area: Georgia Washington Junior High School or the Montgomery County Maintenance Shop on Meriwether Road. For more details, call (334) 832-1210.

 

Town Hall will be closed in observance of Memorial Day May 27.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Need a pep talk? Get your head in the game with Kevin Elko, one of America’s top motivational speakers, who will coach guests on “Developing Nerves of Steel” at an Auburn Montgomery business luncheon on May 29, 11:30 a.m., at the RSA Activity Center. Tickets are $35, which includeslunch.

Elko is known for his work with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, Louisiana State University football and, most recently, the University of Alabama football program. 

UA football coach Nick Saban said, "Kevin Elko is the real deal. I’ve been there when he delivers one of his famous talks, and he really fires everyone up. I’ll never let anyone else speak to my team.”

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office now accepting applications for Citizens Police Academy

 

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for our Citizens Academy.  The Citizens Academy was established in 1997 to educate the citizens of Montgomery County on how the Sheriff’s Office operates and to promote public safety among our community members.  Classes are designed to be interesting as well as informative.  Citizens are given an opportunity to ride with a Deputy on patrol, tour the County Jail, volunteer at events that are sponsored by the Sheriff’s Office as well as train on the Firearms Training Simulator.

 

The Citizens Academy is a ‘free’ 6-week course that meets on Monday evenings from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at our office, located at 115 South Perry Street.  All material will be discussed during the meetings and neither homework nor physical activity is required.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office to hold Firearms Familiarization Course

 

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is gearing up for our next Firearms Familiarization Course which will be held on Saturday, June 8th.  The class is 8 hours and is FREE to Montgomery County citizens!  The first 4 hours are classroom instruction on firearm safety and firearm laws.  The second 4 hours are on the Firing Range under the instruction of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Range Master.  Class participants must be citizens of Montgomery County and must obtain a pistol permit prior to registering for the class.  To apply for a pistol permit, visit our website at www.MontgomerySheriff.com or come by the Sheriff’s Office at 100 South Lawrence Street, Legal Services Division or contact them direct at 832-1339.  Please keep in mind processing time is between 4-6 weeks for pistol permits to be issued.

Air Force Maj. Gen. Walter D. Givhan talks value of education with TROY grads

 

MONTGOMERY—U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Walter D. Givhan, a Troy University alumnus, told TROY graduates that education will help them deal with new challenges and demanding situations as they move forward with their careers.

Givhan delivered the keynote address to graduates during spring commencement for the Montgomery Campus on Monday, May 20, inside the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts. Some 140 students took part in the 7 p.m. ceremony.

In all, 192 students earned undergraduate and graduate degrees this spring at the Montgomery Campus.
