John Hall set to speak at Architreats tomorrow

Join the Alabama Department of Archives and History on Thursday, May 17th at noon as ArchiTreats: Food for Thought continues another year of informative talks on Alabama history at the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

John Hall will present William Bartram in Alabama (Who is William Bartram and Why Should I Care?).

William Bartram was a Revolutionary War-era artist and botanist from Philadelphia. Under the sponsorship of a British physician and gardener, he traveled the South for four years, 1774-1777, including a lengthy trip to Alabama in 1775. His important 1791 book, Bartram's Travels, was the first book to describe the South (and Alabama) in detail.

Montgomery skate park to relocate, paves way for new development

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- New development is on the way for Montgomery. But it means one popular downtown destination will be relocated.

It all came down to a unanimous vote of the city council to sell the property where the Montgomery skate park is located.

It's on Bibb Street across from the convention center.

City development directors say a local businessman is interested in building a residential and retail space there.

It's expected to be roughly six stories high--complete with loft apartments and retail shops.

The city council voted to sell the property for $300,000 dollars.

Development directors say once they close on it, the new owner will have one year to start construction.

Suspect's photo released in post office thefts

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- Three car-break-ins at three Montgomery post offices. They happened in the blink of an eye - in broad daylight Monday. Now, authorities say they've found security camera footage of the apparent suspect responsible for the crimes.

This female used a card taken in one of the thefts at an Auburn Wells Fargo branch several hours after the thefts. If you have information regarding her identity, call the Secret Witness Line at 262-4000 or CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP or the Criminal Investigations Division of MPD at 625-2831.

The thief wasn't subtle-- knocking out the windows to get to the women's purses left inside.

It happened at post office locations on Winton Blount Boulevard, the Eastern Bypass and the downtown office on Catoma Street.

"This is my window for today--in case of rain," says Peggy Hillis as she holds up a plastic tarp attached to her window.

MPS closes Children's Center to safeguard students

MPS closes Children's Center to safeguard students

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -  The following is a news release from Montgomery County Public Schools:

An outbreak of flu-like symptoms is prompting school officials to close The Children's Center for three days as a proactive measure. The school serves students with a variety of medical and physical challenges.

Superintendent Barbara W. Thompson made the decision after consulting with MPS nursing staff and the county health department.

"We are working to help protect the students at the Center," said Thompson. "The closing will allow students to limit exposure to others and give the virus a chance to run its course."

Tuesday, roughly half of the students and staff at Children's Center have contracted one or more contagious illnesses.
